In Memorium: Tavish

Tavish, our livestock guard dog that took over the post from Shane, died in January due to complications after surgery for a severe joint problem. His devotion to his herd was stronger than the repair we tried and he had to be put down.
When Shane died of old age we weren’t sure that Tavish was up to the task, but that very day a switch was flipped and he became all-business. We will miss him.

Shane - Our Livestock Guard Dog
Shane – Our Livestock Guard Dog

On April 1st, 2014, we lost our beloved Anatolian livestock guard dog, Shane. We adopted him from the Anatolian Rescue who help transport him from Sprngfield, MO to Colorado in 2005. He took on his duties immediately and became the guardian and friend of all members of our Alpaca herd.

He’s now buried in one of the alpaca’s favorite pastures.

He was an incredibly loyal, loving, fierce and friendly dog and he will be greatly missed.

2014 Spring Lambs have arrived at Piñon Wood Ranch

Spring arrived at Pinon Wood Ranch on March 4th this year with the birth of our first 2014 lambs, Cocoa and Jewel. Due to the many demands that spring brings to ranch life we are somewhat delinquent debuting our latest lambs, but they have all arrived and here is our photo album for this year.

Coca and Jewel, Blarney Stone, Nessy and Bamff, Almond Joy and Shane all have our new UK bloodlines from grandparent that live in the Shetland Islands.

This year’s lambs will be weaned and available for sale by mid-June. All are welcome to visit the lambs in person at Pinon Wood Ranch or stop by and see us in the Sheep Tent at the Estes Park Wool Market, June 7th & 8th in Estes Parke, CO. We are also planning on showing our sheep at the New Mexico State Fair this year in Albuquerque, NM. Check our Calendar of Events for those dates.

Sheep In A Jeep

How do sheep get to Telluride for a parade?  In a truck?  In a trailer?  What about the Jeep!  With parking being a problem for this event, and the two sheep going being lambs that would easily fit in the back of our Jeep, it seemed the obvious answer.

Sheep In A Jeep for Blog

The week we bought our very first Shetland Sheep back in 2003 was also the week we bought our Jeep.  We just happened to be in a bookstore that same week and came across the children’s book “Sheep in a Jeep” by Nancy Shaw.  Of course it became an instant addition to our library.  This 4th of July we lived “Sheep in a Jeep”.

We (our sheep) were asked to be part of the Many Hands Fiber Arts Festival float in the annual Telluride 4th of July Parade. Daisy and Glasgow attracted a lot of attention and got lots of pets as they “floated” down Main Street in Telluride. They were both pretty tired by the time it was all over but I think they enjoyed the adventure. Much to our surprise they were extremely well behaved and even bah’d back when admirers spoke to them.

Summer Surprise

Miss Kitty & Summer Surprise

Last week Peg went out to feed the sheep in the morning and much to her surprise there was a brand new ewe lamb running around with the adult ewes. We thought we were done with lambing and weaning for this year. After sorting out who belonged to whom, it turned out the Mom was a Spring lamb from last year that we had not bred last Fall because of her age. After breeding season was over we put her back in with the other adult ewes. When we counted backwards from the day of the birth she was bred the end of January and we figured out the ram she spent a short time with that day. At the time we were not worried as we thought breeding season was over. When we consulted our local vet he said she should not have been in season at that time, but sometimes it takes young ewes a while to get on a predicable schedule. These sheep prove every year we still have more to learn.
As you can see, she is adorable and we are having so much fun spoiling her. There was no other option for a name but “Summer Surprise”!

Estes Park Wool Market / National Shetland Sheep Show

O'Doul with Ribbon
O’Doul with Ribbon

The weekend of June 8th and 9th we attended the Estes Park Wool Market in Estes Park, Colorado.  Each year a breed is selected to have their National Show at this event.  This year they hosted the National Shetland Show.  There were Shetland breeders from all over the country and the classes were some of the largest we have ever participated in.  Being a small breeder with less experience than many of the exhibitors there we were not expecting to win anything.  We were pleasantly surprised and very proud of our Spring Ram, O’Doul, who placed 2nd in the Spring Ram Lamb Class.
